At the Turn of the Last Century

In the period around 1900, we were a very different country from what we are today. From a nation of a few million, mainly of British and French descent, we were transformed into a multicultural nation virtually overnight, with a million and a half immigrants from eastern Europe flooding into the prairies at the invitation of Laurier's government.

At the same time, aboriginal people were marginalized, black people were discouraged from entering the country, immigrants from China had to pay the Head Tax, Japanese settlers were victims of race riots, and would-be immigrants from India were not allowed to disembark from their ship in Vancouver's harbour.

What do you think of the changes to population that occurred at that time? Was it a change for the better? If the prairies had not been settled, how would our country be different today? Consider the discrimination against blacks and Asians. Why do you think they were treated so poorly? Why do you think aboriginals and Metis were so marginalized? We have come a long way in the last century in terms of tolerance. What would account for that? Are we morally superior now, or is it something else?

Reflect on the questions above and choose one to comment on in a sentence or two, based on your readings so far.

  1. we are still learning how to be morally superior, there is still alot of discrimination in this country today yet we have made it a place where every race can come to canada without a head tax or getting sent back to their own homeland

I think that if we did not settle the praires that our country would be way different then it is today. My reasoning for this is that the praires would not be producing wheat and what not they may just be the sights of huge factories. Also we would have to get our wheat and what not shipped in from different countries. This would make us a much poorer country then we are today.

  4. i think that the natives were marginalized because the government needed room for the European immigrants and to stop violent interactions between them.

  5. The increase in population was a hard thing for those already living in Canada to deal with. People were crammed together and lived in horrible conditions just to make room for the new European immigrants. It was an unfair government decision and they were not given a choice.

  6. I think our tolerance has changed because we understand more about the different cultures, not because we've become better people.
